The almost43 million figure that BroadbandNow reached for their study was based upon monitoring in on a random sample of the more than 11.6 thousand families and home addresses that the FCC lists as” served” by theirinformation. Broadband Now’s own evaluation discovered these ISP’s cutting off a full13%of the addresses offered– largely in rural locales.

Aside from< a data-ga=" [["Embedded Url","External link","https://www.fiercewireless.com/regulatory/2-fcc-commissioners-slam-fcc-broadband-maps-as-basis-for-rdof",{"metric25":1}]] href =" https://www.fiercewireless.com/regulatory/2-fcc-commissioners-slam-fcc-broadband-maps-as-basis-for-rdof" rel=" noopener noreferrer" target=" _ blank" > outright misdirection, one of the biggest factors that the FCC keeps getting these basic numbers wrong boils down to something: census data. ISP’s are understood to fudge their own numbers to the FCC, reporting that entire blocks of an offered census block as served when only one of your homes on that block are getting any service at all.

In the report, the researchers note that about half of that13%was identified as being served by at least one locally-sourced ISP, which the scientists trusted– though again, that’s if you’re accepting the FCC’s own quotes. Even with the 13%sliced in half, the researchers kept in mind that there are more than 21 million Americans because piece of information alone, on top of the figures the FCC’s already advanced.
